Indeed, when two great teams are in the middle of a long rally, there seems to be a fluid dance among teammates; when a team is clicking or flowing together, it’s one of the most entertaining parts of the sport of volleyball. A team that is inclined to stand still and stagnate must practice the flow patterns out of every base position in the game. Chapter 4 describes a great drill called Speed Ball that helps all teams with their flow. You will soon find out who knows how to balance the court with a teammate during play, and it’s an easy drill to learn, so you’ll see rapid progress in the flow between your players.

Players moving to coverage position should get as close as possible to their base, then stop their feet before the hitter contacts the ball. This technique helps them make an immediate move to the ball once it comes off the blocker’s hands. Player and Team Assessment One of the best ways to assess and teach positioning, as well as individual techniques, is to use video. Coaches should first draw the positions for each team formation (on a whiteboard or on paper) to give players a visual picture in their minds of where they should go when they step onto the court.

Thus, coaches may face the challenging task of helping players who don’t like being physical develop into a tough, aggressive team. The best way to improve mental toughness in individuals is to put them in stressful drills during practice that force them to fight their way out. Most of the drills included in this book challenge the athletes physically and mentally so they will become tougher and more independent. Many of the drills also require players to complete a skill multiple times in a row in order to become consistent.
