A furnace blast of heat singed her jerkin and set her cap ribbons alight, then the dragon lost its hold on the earth and floated up into the sky, screaming with rage. Argent ran down the hillside with huge strides, desperately batting out the flames that were turning her cap ribbons to ash. She knew she had been very lucky to survive. Argent reached Morgana in ten strides and tried to set her on her feet again, but the terrified little girl could not, or would not, stand up. Frantically Argent scanned the hillside above them. The whole copse was in flames now. A thick smudge of black smoke rose into the blue sky and, rising with it, came the dragon. As Argent watched, the dragon angled its wings and allowed itself to soar up into the sky.
